COSTS, QUOTES & WHAT AFFECTS THEM

DAMP PROOFING COSTS
IN CUMBRIA.

There’s no honest price list for damp. Here’s what actually decides the cost, how to keep it down and how to get a quote you can trust.

What decides
the cost.

Two damp patches can look identical and need completely different work. One might be water running down from a blocked gutter; the other might be moisture rising through an old stone wall. A price list would be a guess, and guessing with damp tends to mean paying twice.

The cause

This matters more than anything else. A leaking downpipe, soil piled against a wall, condensation and genuine rising damp each need different work. Getting the diagnosis right is what stops you paying for treatment you don’t need.

How much is affected

One patch behind a sofa is a different job from a whole ground floor. The length of wall, the number of rooms and how far the damp has travelled all shape the quote.

Your walls

Cumbria has everything from solid stone cottages to modern cavity-wall homes. Older solid walls often need breathable materials and a different approach, which affects both the method and the materials.

Putting it back

Damp work often means removing spoiled plaster. Replastering, skirting boards and drying time before decorating are part of the real cost, so they belong in the quote rather than appearing afterwards.

Access & preparation

Fitted kitchens, heavy furniture, radiators and hard-to-reach walls all add time. Clearing the area before work starts can make a real difference.

From quick fixes
to bigger projects.

Every home is different, but most jobs fall into a few rough sizes. Use this as a guide to scale, not a quote.

Often at the smaller end

  • Finding a simple cause, like a blocked gutter, that’s quick to put right
  • Treating mould in a single room
  • Patch plaster repairs

Middle of the range

  • Fitting a PIV unit to help with condensation
  • Treating damp along one wall and replastering it
  • Mould treatment that includes replacing damaged plaster or board

Larger projects

  • Treating several walls or a whole ground floor
  • Replastering full rooms after damp work
  • Combined damp, ventilation and plastering work

Spend less.
Get it right.

Ways to keep the cost down

  1. Act early. Damp spreads and spoils more plaster the longer it’s left.
  2. Keep gutters, downpipes and drains clear, and keep soil and paths below the damp-proof course.
  3. Use extractor fans and keep trickle vents open to cut condensation.
  4. Send photos and rough measurements when you get in touch, so the survey is focused.
  5. Have the damp work and replastering done together, rather than paying two trades to work around each other.

Be wary of a quote that

  • recommends a damp-proof course without explaining the cause
  • gives a firm price for a big job from a photo alone
  • leaves out replastering, making good or waste removal
  • doesn’t make clear what is and isn’t included
  • pushes you to decide on the day

Comparing
quotes.

Is the cause explained?

A good quote says what’s causing the damp and why the proposed work fixes it. If two companies diagnose different causes, ask each of them to explain theirs.

Is everything included?

Check that preparation, treatment, replastering, skirting, waste removal and making good are listed. A low headline price can grow once the missing parts are added.

What happens afterwards?

Ask about drying time, when you can decorate and what to do if anything changes. Clear aftercare is a sign the job has been thought through.

Damp proofing costs
FAQs.

Why don’t you publish prices?

Because a fair price depends on the cause, and the cause can’t be seen from a price list. Two identical-looking patches can need very different work. A free survey lets us quote for what your home actually needs, rather than padding a guess.

Is the survey really free?

Yes. Damp surveys and quotations are free and there’s no obligation to go ahead. If you need a formal written report for a house purchase, mortgage or insurer, mention it when you get in touch so we can confirm whether we can provide it.

Can you give me a rough idea from photos?

Photos help us understand what kind of job it’s likely to be and what to look at during the survey. For anything beyond a small repair, the cause needs checking in person before we can put a fair price on it.

Will the price change once work starts?

The quote sets out the agreed work. Occasionally, removing old plaster reveals something that couldn’t be seen at the survey. If that happens, we’ll explain it and agree any change with you before doing extra work.

Is the cheapest quote the best value?

Not always. A cheaper quote that treats the wrong cause, or leaves out replastering and making good, can cost more in the end. Compare what each quote includes and how clearly it explains the problem.

Do you do the plastering as well?

Yes. With 8 years’ experience in damp proofing and all aspects of plastering, we can quote for the damp work and the replastering together, so each stage follows in the right order.

YOUR ENQUIRY / YOUR INFORMATION

A little clarity.

Damp Guy uses your name, email, property postcode, message, optional phone number and any photos you choose to upload to respond to your enquiry and discuss work you request. With your enquiry we also note the page you sent it from, the name of the website that referred you (such as Google, not the full link) and, if you tell us, how you heard about us and who recommended us. Contact us at contact@dampguy.co.uk about your information.

Why we use it

To take steps at your request before providing a service, and for our legitimate interests in responding to enquiries and protecting the website from abuse. Your details are not added to a mailing list unless you tick the box asking for seasonal tips, which you can stop at any time from the link in every tips email.

Emails about your job

While we work with you, we may email you about your quote, booking, aftercare, payment and, once the work is done, to ask for a review or check everything is still right. These come from contact@dampguy.co.uk. We may send you a private link to a page showing your job’s progress, quotes and invoices. It asks for the property’s postcode before showing anything, and stops working a while after the job is finished. You can ask us to stop non-essential emails at any time.

Where it goes

Your enquiry and any uploaded photos are stored in Damp Guy’s private admin inbox and sent to Damp Guy’s business mailbox, using the existing website and email hosting service. Photos are optimised for viewing and embedded in the notification email. We remove embedded metadata, such as camera location information, from the stored copies. Only authorised administrators can access enquiry photos and invoice records through the website. Please only include photos you are happy to share with Damp Guy. There is no third-party CAPTCHA or advertising tracker on this form.

Security and storage

A necessary, secure cookie lasts for one hour to protect the form. Hashed connection and submission records are kept for up to 24 hours to limit spam and duplicates. The temporary delivery-queue copy is removed after the local mail server accepts it; failed deliveries are retried for up to seven days. The separate admin inbox and mailbox correspondence are kept while needed to handle your enquiry and resulting work. Invoice records are kept for accounting and applicable legal obligations. Private admin records are backed up daily, with scheduled database backups retained for 30 days. Administrative deployment backups and hosting access logs are managed separately. Admin login uses necessary secure session cookies; these are not used for advertising.

Facebook and Instagram

If you comment on Damp Guy’s Facebook Page or Instagram posts, Meta shares your name or username, your comment and its time with our private admin system so we can read and reply. We also keep anonymous reach and engagement figures for our own posts. To have your Facebook or Instagram comments removed from our system, email contact@dampguy.co.uk with your Facebook name or Instagram username and we’ll delete them within 30 days and confirm by email. You can also delete your own comments on Facebook or Instagram at any time.

Optional website analytics

On our main website, if you choose to allow analytics, we collect pages viewed, referring websites, campaign labels, device and browser categories, contact-button clicks and accepted-enquiry counts. We use these statistics to understand and improve our website. Analytics stays on our hosting server. We do not include your enquiry details or photos in analytics. We process your connection address and browser details to create a monthly changing identifier; the address itself is not stored in the analytics database. An identifier in session storage groups activity into visits. Analytics records are kept for up to 90 days, with private backups retained for a further 30 days. Browser privacy signals and visits from admin browsers are excluded. You can decline or withdraw permission using Analytics preferences in the website footer. Your preference is saved in local storage until you change it or clear browser storage. Google Search Console separately provides aggregate search-performance reports; Google does not provide individual visitors’ search terms.
