CAUSES, PREVENTION & TREATMENT

BATHROOM MOULD
IN CUMBRIAN HOMES.

Black spots on the ceiling, in the grout or around the window that come back however often you clean them? Here’s why it happens and how to stop it returning.

Why it keeps
coming back.

A single shower releases a lot of moisture into a small room. If that steam isn’t removed quickly, it condenses on the coldest surfaces, often ceiling corners, outside walls and window reveals, and mould follows.

Extraction that isn’t doing its job

Many bathroom fans are too small, clogged with dust, badly ducted or switched off too soon. Some vent into the loft instead of outside, which moves the problem rather than solving it.

Cold corners & ceilings

Where insulation is thin or missing, ceilings and outside walls stay cold enough for steam to condense on them every day. That’s where mould appears first.

Hidden leaks

Failed sealant, cracked grout or a leaking pipe can keep a wall or floor damp behind the tiles. Mould that won’t shift, or staining on the ceiling below, needs checking for leaks.

Simple habits that help

  1. Run the extractor fan during your shower and for 15 to 20 minutes afterwards.
  2. Keep the door shut while showering, so steam goes out through the fan rather than into the house.
  3. Wipe down tiles, glass and windowsills after showering.
  4. Open the window afterwards if you can, and keep any trickle vents open.
  5. Keep the heating low and steady in cold weather rather than letting the room go cold.
  6. Clean the fan grille regularly so dust doesn’t restrict the airflow.

Signs it needs a closer look

  • Mould returns within a few weeks of cleaning
  • It’s spreading beyond the bathroom, onto landings or into bedrooms
  • Black mould deep in silicone sealant that won’t clean off
  • Plaster or ceiling board that feels soft, bubbles or comes away
  • A damp patch on the ceiling below, or on the wall outside the bathroom
  • The fan can’t hold a sheet of toilet paper against its grille

How we
sort it.

Find what’s feeding it

We look at the extraction, ducting, cold surfaces, sealant and possible leaks, and at when the mould appears. That tells us whether it’s a ventilation, temperature or water problem.

Treat the mould properly

Affected surfaces are treated, and plaster, board or sealant that’s too far gone is replaced rather than painted over.

Stop it returning

That might mean improving the extraction, a PIV system for whole-home condensation, or fixing a cold spot or leak. We explain what will make the difference before quoting.

Bathroom mould
FAQs.

Is black mould in the bathroom harmful?

UK government guidance says damp and mould can affect anyone’s health, particularly children, older people and anyone with a breathing condition or a weakened immune system. Small spots should be cleaned and the cause dealt with; mould that keeps returning or covers a large area needs a proper look.

What’s the best way to clean bathroom mould?

For small areas on hard surfaces, use a mould remover following the product instructions, wear gloves and keep the room ventilated. Avoid brushing dry mould, which spreads spores. Mould deep in silicone usually means the sealant needs replacing.

Will anti-mould paint fix it?

It can slow mould on the surface, but it won’t stop condensation or a leak. Without dealing with the moisture, mould usually returns, sometimes underneath the new paint.

How long should a bathroom fan run?

During your shower and for around 15 to 20 minutes afterwards is a good rule. Many fans have an overrun timer that keeps them running after the light is switched off.

My bathroom has no window. Is that a problem?

Not if the extraction is right. An internal bathroom relies entirely on its fan, so it needs to be powerful enough, ducted to the outside and kept clean.

Do you replace mouldy ceilings and walls?

Yes. Where plaster or board has been damaged, we can replace and replaster it as part of the job, once the cause of the moisture has been dealt with.

YOUR ENQUIRY / YOUR INFORMATION

A little clarity.

Damp Guy uses your name, email, property postcode, message, optional phone number and any photos you choose to upload to respond to your enquiry and discuss work you request. With your enquiry we also note the page you sent it from, the name of the website that referred you (such as Google, not the full link) and, if you tell us, how you heard about us and who recommended us. Contact us at contact@dampguy.co.uk about your information.

Why we use it

To take steps at your request before providing a service, and for our legitimate interests in responding to enquiries and protecting the website from abuse. Your details are not added to a mailing list unless you tick the box asking for seasonal tips, which you can stop at any time from the link in every tips email.

Emails about your job

While we work with you, we may email you about your quote, booking, aftercare, payment and, once the work is done, to ask for a review or check everything is still right. These come from contact@dampguy.co.uk. We may send you a private link to a page showing your job’s progress, quotes and invoices. It asks for the property’s postcode before showing anything, and stops working a while after the job is finished. You can ask us to stop non-essential emails at any time.

Where it goes

Your enquiry and any uploaded photos are stored in Damp Guy’s private admin inbox and sent to Damp Guy’s business mailbox, using the existing website and email hosting service. Photos are optimised for viewing and embedded in the notification email. We remove embedded metadata, such as camera location information, from the stored copies. Only authorised administrators can access enquiry photos and invoice records through the website. Please only include photos you are happy to share with Damp Guy. There is no third-party CAPTCHA or advertising tracker on this form.

Security and storage

A necessary, secure cookie lasts for one hour to protect the form. Hashed connection and submission records are kept for up to 24 hours to limit spam and duplicates. The temporary delivery-queue copy is removed after the local mail server accepts it; failed deliveries are retried for up to seven days. The separate admin inbox and mailbox correspondence are kept while needed to handle your enquiry and resulting work. Invoice records are kept for accounting and applicable legal obligations. Private admin records are backed up daily, with scheduled database backups retained for 30 days. Administrative deployment backups and hosting access logs are managed separately. Admin login uses necessary secure session cookies; these are not used for advertising.

Facebook and Instagram

If you comment on Damp Guy’s Facebook Page or Instagram posts, Meta shares your name or username, your comment and its time with our private admin system so we can read and reply. We also keep anonymous reach and engagement figures for our own posts. To have your Facebook or Instagram comments removed from our system, email contact@dampguy.co.uk with your Facebook name or Instagram username and we’ll delete them within 30 days and confirm by email. You can also delete your own comments on Facebook or Instagram at any time.

Optional website analytics

On our main website, if you choose to allow analytics, we collect pages viewed, referring websites, campaign labels, device and browser categories, contact-button clicks and accepted-enquiry counts. We use these statistics to understand and improve our website. Analytics stays on our hosting server. We do not include your enquiry details or photos in analytics. We process your connection address and browser details to create a monthly changing identifier; the address itself is not stored in the analytics database. An identifier in session storage groups activity into visits. Analytics records are kept for up to 90 days, with private backups retained for a further 30 days. Browser privacy signals and visits from admin browsers are excluded. You can decline or withdraw permission using Analytics preferences in the website footer. Your preference is saved in local storage until you change it or clear browser storage. Google Search Console separately provides aggregate search-performance reports; Google does not provide individual visitors’ search terms.
