POSITIVE INPUT VENTILATION, HONESTLY

IS PIV WORTH IT
FOR CUMBRIAN HOMES?

Streaming windows and mould in more than one room every winter? PIV can make a big difference in the right house. Here’s how to tell if yours is one of them.

What PIV
does well.

A PIV unit sits in the loft and gently pushes filtered air into the home through a ceiling diffuser, usually on the landing. That steady supply dilutes the moist air that causes condensation, and the displaced air leaves through the normal gaps and vents.

Whole-house, not one room

Unlike a dehumidifier, PIV works across the house at once. That suits homes where condensation shows up on windows, in bedrooms and in corners all over the place.

PIV or dehumidifier?

Running cost

On normal settings, a modern PIV fan uses little electricity. Units with a built-in heater use much more when the heater runs, so the model and settings make the difference. Ask for the figures for the unit proposed.

Low effort

Once fitted and set up, PIV runs continuously without anyone remembering to switch it on, empty a tank or open a window. Filters need checking and changing as the maker recommends.

Will PIV help
your home?

Good signs PIV will help

  1. Windows stream with condensation in several rooms most winter mornings
  2. Mould keeps coming back in bedrooms, corners and behind furniture
  3. The house smells musty, especially after it’s been closed up
  4. You already ventilate well and it hasn’t been enough
  5. There’s a loft with room for the unit and safe access

Signs something else comes first

  • A single damp patch that grows after rain
  • A tide mark low on ground-floor walls
  • A leak from a pipe, roof or gutter
  • Bathroom or kitchen extractor fans that don’t work
  • A flat or home with no loft space, which needs a different unit

How fitting
works.

Check it suits the house

We look at where the condensation is, the loft, the landing ceiling for the diffuser, existing extraction and any other damp, so PIV is only fitted where it will help.

Fit & set up

The unit goes in the loft, the diffuser in the ceiling and the electrics are connected by a suitably qualified person. The fan speed is set for the size of the home.

Aftercare

You’ll be shown the controls and how to check the filter. We can remind you when it’s due a check.

Is PIV worth it?
FAQs.

Does PIV make the house colder?

The air comes from the loft, which is usually milder than outside, and is introduced gently. Some units have a heater to temper the air in cold weather. Positioning the diffuser well avoids a noticeable draught.

Is PIV noisy?

On normal settings, most people don’t notice it. The model, fan speed and installation all affect noise, which is why we set it up for your home.

Can I switch it off at night?

It’s designed to run continuously. Switching it off lets moisture build up again, especially overnight when condensation is worst.

Do I still need my extractor fans?

Yes. Kitchens and bathrooms make a lot of moisture quickly, and extractor fans remove it at the source. PIV works alongside them.

Is PIV worth it in a rented property?

For landlords, the low maintenance is a big advantage: tenants don’t have to do anything for it to work. It still needs the right house and any leaks fixing first.

How long does it take to fit?

Most loft installations are done in a day or less. We’ll tell you what’s involved for your home when we survey.

YOUR ENQUIRY / YOUR INFORMATION

A little clarity.

Damp Guy uses your name, email, property postcode, message, optional phone number and any photos you choose to upload to respond to your enquiry and discuss work you request. With your enquiry we also note the page you sent it from, the name of the website that referred you (such as Google, not the full link) and, if you tell us, how you heard about us and who recommended us. Contact us at contact@dampguy.co.uk about your information.

Why we use it

To take steps at your request before providing a service, and for our legitimate interests in responding to enquiries and protecting the website from abuse. Your details are not added to a mailing list unless you tick the box asking for seasonal tips, which you can stop at any time from the link in every tips email.

Emails about your job

While we work with you, we may email you about your quote, booking, aftercare, payment and, once the work is done, to ask for a review or check everything is still right. These come from contact@dampguy.co.uk. We may send you a private link to a page showing your job’s progress, quotes and invoices. It asks for the property’s postcode before showing anything, and stops working a while after the job is finished. You can ask us to stop non-essential emails at any time.

Where it goes

Your enquiry and any uploaded photos are stored in Damp Guy’s private admin inbox and sent to Damp Guy’s business mailbox, using the existing website and email hosting service. Photos are optimised for viewing and embedded in the notification email. We remove embedded metadata, such as camera location information, from the stored copies. Only authorised administrators can access enquiry photos and invoice records through the website. Please only include photos you are happy to share with Damp Guy. There is no third-party CAPTCHA or advertising tracker on this form.

Security and storage

A necessary, secure cookie lasts for one hour to protect the form. Hashed connection and submission records are kept for up to 24 hours to limit spam and duplicates. The temporary delivery-queue copy is removed after the local mail server accepts it; failed deliveries are retried for up to seven days. The separate admin inbox and mailbox correspondence are kept while needed to handle your enquiry and resulting work. Invoice records are kept for accounting and applicable legal obligations. Private admin records are backed up daily, with scheduled database backups retained for 30 days. Administrative deployment backups and hosting access logs are managed separately. Admin login uses necessary secure session cookies; these are not used for advertising.

Facebook and Instagram

If you comment on Damp Guy’s Facebook Page or Instagram posts, Meta shares your name or username, your comment and its time with our private admin system so we can read and reply. We also keep anonymous reach and engagement figures for our own posts. To have your Facebook or Instagram comments removed from our system, email contact@dampguy.co.uk with your Facebook name or Instagram username and we’ll delete them within 30 days and confirm by email. You can also delete your own comments on Facebook or Instagram at any time.

Optional website analytics

On our main website, if you choose to allow analytics, we collect pages viewed, referring websites, campaign labels, device and browser categories, contact-button clicks and accepted-enquiry counts. We use these statistics to understand and improve our website. Analytics stays on our hosting server. We do not include your enquiry details or photos in analytics. We process your connection address and browser details to create a monthly changing identifier; the address itself is not stored in the analytics database. An identifier in session storage groups activity into visits. Analytics records are kept for up to 90 days, with private backups retained for a further 30 days. Browser privacy signals and visits from admin browsers are excluded. You can decline or withdraw permission using Analytics preferences in the website footer. Your preference is saved in local storage until you change it or clear browser storage. Google Search Console separately provides aggregate search-performance reports; Google does not provide individual visitors’ search terms.
