PLASTERING COSTS
IN CUMBRIA.

Two rooms the same size can be very different jobs. Here’s what actually goes into a plastering price, and how to make sure you’re comparing like with like.

What goes into
the price.

Most of the time on a plastering job goes into what you never see: protecting the room, preparing the surface and getting the backing right. That’s why a price per square metre on its own rarely tells the whole story.

The surface underneath

Sound, flat plaster that only needs a skim is the simplest job. Loose or hollow plaster, old wallpaper paste, flaking paint or a textured coating all need dealing with first.

Skim or replaster?

Skim, replaster or board

A skim is a thin finishing coat over a sound surface. Replastering means removing failed plaster and building it back up. Boarding gives a fresh background where the old one is beyond saving, which is common on old ceilings.

Height & access

Stairwells, high ceilings and rooms full of fitted furniture take longer. A stairwell in a three-storey Carlisle terrace needs safe access equipment that a bedroom doesn’t.

Older Cumbrian homes

Uneven stone walls, lath-and-plaster ceilings and decades of patch repairs are common in older houses across Cumbria. They need more material and more care to get a flat, lasting finish.

Beads, corners & making good

New corner beads, window reveals and making good around sockets and pipes all add time. They should be listed in the quote so they don’t appear as extras later.

From small repairs
to whole rooms.

Every job is different, but most fall into a few rough sizes. Use this as a guide to scale, not a quote.

Often at the smaller end

  • Patching after an electrician or plumber
  • Repairing a damaged corner or a small blown area
  • Skimming a single small ceiling

Middle of the range

  • Skimming the walls and ceiling of an average room
  • Boarding and skimming a ceiling
  • Replastering one wall after damp work

Larger projects

  • Hallways and stairwells with high walls
  • Replastering several rooms after a strip-out
  • Replacing old lath-and-plaster ceilings

Spend less.
Get it right.

Ways to keep the cost down

  1. Clear the room, or at least the walls being plastered, before the day.
  2. Get any rewiring, plumbing or new sockets done first, so the walls are only plastered once.
  3. Sort any damp before plastering, or you may pay to do it twice.
  4. Have several rooms done in one visit rather than one at a time.
  5. Send photos and rough room sizes so the quote is accurate from the start.

Be wary of a quote that

  • says it will skim over anything without seeing the surface
  • doesn’t mention preparation, protection or clean-up
  • leaves out beads, reveals or making good
  • can’t tell you roughly how long the plaster will take to dry
  • is far cheaper than others without explaining why

What will be done to the surface?

Check whether the quote is for a skim, a replaster or boarding, and what preparation is included. These are very different jobs with very different prices.

What’s included?

Look for floor protection, removal of waste, beads and making good. A cheap headline price can grow once these are added.

What happens afterwards?

A good plasterer tells you how long to leave it before decorating and how to prepare it for paint.

Plastering costs
FAQs.

Why don’t you publish plastering prices?

Because the surface underneath decides most of the work, and we can’t see that from a price list. Two rooms the same size can take very different amounts of time. A free quote lets us price your job properly.

How long does it take to skim a room?

An average room is often skimmed in a day, sometimes less. Rooms that need old plaster removing, boarding or repairs take longer, and the plaster then needs time to dry before decorating.

Can you plaster in winter?

Yes. Plaster dries more slowly in cold, damp weather, so the room needs gentle heating and ventilation. Fresh plaster mustn’t freeze.

Do I need to move all my furniture?

It helps to clear the room. If that isn’t possible, move things to the middle and we’ll cover them. Tell us when you book.

Do you take on small jobs?

Yes. Patch repairs and making good after other trades are part of our everyday work.

Do you clean up afterwards?

Yes. Floors are protected and waste is removed as part of the job.

YOUR ENQUIRY / YOUR INFORMATION

A little clarity.

Damp Guy uses your name, email, property postcode, message, optional phone number and any photos you choose to upload to respond to your enquiry and discuss work you request. With your enquiry we also note the page you sent it from, the name of the website that referred you (such as Google, not the full link) and, if you tell us, how you heard about us and who recommended us. Contact us at contact@dampguy.co.uk about your information.

Why we use it

To take steps at your request before providing a service, and for our legitimate interests in responding to enquiries and protecting the website from abuse. Your details are not added to a mailing list unless you tick the box asking for seasonal tips, which you can stop at any time from the link in every tips email.

Emails about your job

While we work with you, we may email you about your quote, booking, aftercare, payment and, once the work is done, to ask for a review or check everything is still right. These come from contact@dampguy.co.uk. We may send you a private link to a page showing your job’s progress, quotes and invoices. It asks for the property’s postcode before showing anything, and stops working a while after the job is finished. You can ask us to stop non-essential emails at any time.

Where it goes

Your enquiry and any uploaded photos are stored in Damp Guy’s private admin inbox and sent to Damp Guy’s business mailbox, using the existing website and email hosting service. Photos are optimised for viewing and embedded in the notification email. We remove embedded metadata, such as camera location information, from the stored copies. Only authorised administrators can access enquiry photos and invoice records through the website. Please only include photos you are happy to share with Damp Guy. There is no third-party CAPTCHA or advertising tracker on this form.

Security and storage

A necessary, secure cookie lasts for one hour to protect the form. Hashed connection and submission records are kept for up to 24 hours to limit spam and duplicates. The temporary delivery-queue copy is removed after the local mail server accepts it; failed deliveries are retried for up to seven days. The separate admin inbox and mailbox correspondence are kept while needed to handle your enquiry and resulting work. Invoice records are kept for accounting and applicable legal obligations. Private admin records are backed up daily, with scheduled database backups retained for 30 days. Administrative deployment backups and hosting access logs are managed separately. Admin login uses necessary secure session cookies; these are not used for advertising.

Facebook and Instagram

If you comment on Damp Guy’s Facebook Page or Instagram posts, Meta shares your name or username, your comment and its time with our private admin system so we can read and reply. We also keep anonymous reach and engagement figures for our own posts. To have your Facebook or Instagram comments removed from our system, email contact@dampguy.co.uk with your Facebook name or Instagram username and we’ll delete them within 30 days and confirm by email. You can also delete your own comments on Facebook or Instagram at any time.

Optional website analytics

On our main website, if you choose to allow analytics, we collect pages viewed, referring websites, campaign labels, device and browser categories, contact-button clicks and accepted-enquiry counts. We use these statistics to understand and improve our website. Analytics stays on our hosting server. We do not include your enquiry details or photos in analytics. We process your connection address and browser details to create a monthly changing identifier; the address itself is not stored in the analytics database. An identifier in session storage groups activity into visits. Analytics records are kept for up to 90 days, with private backups retained for a further 30 days. Browser privacy signals and visits from admin browsers are excluded. You can decline or withdraw permission using Analytics preferences in the website footer. Your preference is saved in local storage until you change it or clear browser storage. Google Search Console separately provides aggregate search-performance reports; Google does not provide individual visitors’ search terms.
